“We aim to create a safe space for pupils to ask questions, explore faiths and celebrate the world around them. By the end of Year 11, students will have a growing understanding of local religions, that allows them to interact with any person with tolerance and acceptance of difference.”
RE is delivered by class teachers in allotted one-hour slots per week. The subject matter is influenced by the quest being taught and the subject leader ensures there are clear links between a religion and other areas of learning. At the end of the quest, pupils will participate in the Quest Quiz, with a specific question dedicated to RE, to assess their learning.
Most lessons take place in the classroom, using a range of different teaching styles (role-play, videos, stories) but where appropriate, guest speakers, visits to local places of worship and whole school events are encouraged and arranged. During the 5-year curriculum, we have held an in-school Shrine Day, looking at different deities of Hindu Dharam, visited St. Mary’s Church, Prittlewell and the Quaker House in Leigh-On-Sea, and had visiting speakers from Westcliff Imam and a volunteer missionary.
All pupils will be given equal opportunities to access this area of the curriculum, but we accept that on some occasions parents may wish to exercise their right of withdrawal. If this is the case, parents will be given the opportunity to discuss this with the class and Head Teacher.
